FPGA Design: Measuring Applications

One example for a measuring FPGA application is the photon counter designed by abaxor engineering. Up to 30 APD modules can be connected to the device. The 30 measuring channels are integrated into a measuring system of the customer.

An FPGA (Pro ASIC by Actel) will be used to reach the required short and precisely defined signal propagation time, the jitter lasts only a few picoseconds. Via the customer-specific interface, the photon counter delivers precise information for each detection, that is concerning the time and the channel in which a certain incident occurred.

Since the APD modules are switched on and off via the device, supervising functions as well as a safety shutdown of the modules might also be integrated.
